Black Tie Affair questions the formality of holiday gatherings. As I was making beads, I was struck by the idea that black and white are often seen as formal colors and I wanted to contrast that idea with the playful style of my work. The colors of the work suggest the dress code of formal occasions, yet the playful style of the sculpture evokes the merry-making of a party or celebration. It calls into question our need for formality at celebrations: How does it enhance the experience? Why are we drawn to it? Does it make us feel more festive?
